The FSU chapter was founded October 24, 1941. In the early years, members of ALD sponsored money-raising projects to provide a hundred dollar scholarship for one of their members. A candlelight initiation ceremony was held during both the Fall and Spring quarters for freshmen women who had received a 3.5 or or better scholastic average their first two terms.

Dr. Barbara Mann, Associate Professor of Higher Education and Director of the Hardee Center for Women in Higher Education at FSU, served as a Council Member-at-Large from 1986 to 1992. She went to FSU in 1980 and earned a degree in higher education. She returned to FSU in 1988 and worked as an associate professor of higher education and the Director of the Hardee Center for Women in Higher Education, where she served as a major professor for 32 doctoral students and 240 master’s students. Her legacy and commitment to the Hardee Center are honored by the annual Dr. Barbara Mann Award, established at FSU in 2017-18.
