ALD's 90th Anniversary

1924-2014: We Pass Our Torches On

In 1924, Dean of Women Maria Leonard founded Alpha Lambda Delta in order to honor exceptional students at the University of Illinois.  Ninety years later, ALD is still celebrating success!

In 2014, National Alpha Lambda Delta will be celebrating our Society’s 90th Anniversary, and we invite all of our chapters to help us celebrate.  Starting this October at the 2013 Workshop (we’re so excited, we just can’t wait for 2014 to get here), National ALD has big plans for making sure our 90th is a memorable experience.  If you'd like to be kept up-to-date on ALD's 90th Anniversary plans, click here to fill out a short contact form.

In honor of the 90th Anniversary of National Alpha Lambda Delta and to support the continued growth of our national scholarships and fellowships, the National Council and National Office of Alpha Lambda Delta are working with our members and our chapters to increase the value of our Perpetual Fellowship Fund - and the number and amount of scholarships and fellowships Alpha Lambda Delta can offer - with our Anniversary Campaign: $90,000 for the 90th!

Over the following months, Alpha Lambda Delta will be working to raise $90,000 to add to the Perpetual Fellowship Fund - the endowment that funds over $200,000 annually in scholarships and fellowships to outstanding members.  Since 1940, Alpha Lambda Delta has awarded 735 Graduate Fellowships, 507 Trow Undergraduate Scholarships, and 51 Stemler Study Abroad Scholarships.

Founded in 1924, Alpha Lambda Delta will celebrate her 90th anniversary in 2014. To honor our Society’s past, and to help build our Society’s future, the ALD National Council has set a fundraising goal of $90,000 to help expand our offerings of scholarships and fellowships.

Since the Great Recession of 2008, the cost of higher education has far exceeded the rate of inflation. Between 2001 and 2010 the cost of a university education soared - from 23% of median annual earnings to 38%; in consequence, student debt has doubled in the past 15 years. Two-thirds of graduates now take out loans.

Alpha Lambda Delta helps ALD members meet these rising costs with scholarships and fellowships. Since ALD offered its first fellowship in 1940, over 1,350 students have received over 2.75 million dollars from ALD. Annually, Alpha Lambda Delta awards almost $200,000 in scholarships and fellowships, but we want to do even more!

Our goal of $90,000, in addition to serving as a shorthand reminder of our 90 years’ of history celebrating America’s top students, will allow us to increase the number of scholarships and fellowships offered to our members.
