Are you
interested in starting a chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta on your campus?
In the past three years, Alpha Lambda Delta has
installed over 20 new chapters, and we're hearing from more new
schools every day!
Petitioning National Alpha Lambda Delta to
become a new chapter of the national organization is a detailed, but
fairly simple
process; the exceptional students on your campus will thank you
for the opportunities membership in National ALD will afford them.
A chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta can improve retention and
leadership identity on your campus. If you're interested in
starting a chapter, please contact
Glenda Earwood to receive a copy of the "Starting a New Chapter"
CD from the National Office. This CD contains all the
documents you'll need to start your own chapter of ALD at your
campus - but here's are a few quick points about the process:
- Establish a local honor society in which
members meet Alpha Lambda Delta eligibility requirements (3.5
average for the first term, or cumulatively for the entire first
year of college while carrying a full-time academic load of 12
or more hours). If a chapter of ALD is installed, all
members of the local organization regardless of class rank, may
be installed as charter members.
- Select or appoint advisors. Your
chapter should have two advisors, ideally one drawn from the
faculty and one from administrative staff, but if that
combination isn't feasible, two faculty or two staff are
acceptable. These individuals should be prepared to
continue as advisors following the chapter's installation as a
chapter of ALD.
- Select an appropriate name for the local
group. Some combination of the letters Alpha, Lambda, and
Delta or simply the name "Freshman Honor Society" is usually
chosen, but names are not limited to these options.
- Prepare a constitution patterned after
that of the national organization. A sample is included on
the CD.
- Identify financial resources for
installation and chapter activities. Some possibilities
include local dues, institutional support from the President or
Chief Academic Officer, fund raising activities, donations, etc.
- Prepare and submit a petition to
establish a chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta when the local group
and its advisors believe that a chapter of the National Society
will succeed. The interval between receipt of a petition
and a decision regarding acceptance is expected to be no more
than six weeks.
- The petitioning group is responsible for
installation costs (e.g. activities such as a banquet or
reception, programs, etc.) and meals and lodging for the
Installing Officer. Travel costs for the installing
officer will be paid by National Alpha Lambda Delta.
